Name: Irene Yong

Irene Yong always had a passion for early childhood, growing up dreaming of becoming a teacher as she cared for her younger brother in Korea.

After two years working as a preschool teacher, she decided to take her career further with a qualification that could support her to explore early childhood curricula around the world.

“I chose NZTC because it is well-known in the early childhood education sector and could support me to learn the New Zealand early childhood curriculum, which is absolutely different from back home,” said Irene.

“The online learning system without any exams seemed perfect for me coming to learn ECE from another cultural background. It has helped me to develop my own teaching philosophy.”

Irene found freedom in NZTC’s flexible learning modes, which enabled her to continue working in an early childhood centre while studying.

“It was definitely flexible to study while working at the centre as I could do assignments at my own pace. NZTC Online provides a range of materials so I had no problem finishing my study.”

The early childhood teacher had easy access to support throughout her time at NZTC, with the college’s lecturers and Pastoral Support Team just an email or phone call away.

“NZTC care for international students through pastoral support services and helpful staff. If I needed help with my study or wellbeing I could get it through email, phone calls, discussion forums or appointments with the lecturer.”

With plans to travel to experience different cultures and curricula in the future, Irene values the wide range of perspectives she was offered at NZTC.

“You will learn a lot from your classmates and lecturers from diverse backgrounds, as we discuss and share our point of views during international tutorials and Block Courses,” said Irene.
