Fuelled by a passion for nurturing young minds, the Richards embarked on their study journey together.

Katalin and Benjie Richards are redefining what it means to balance family, study, and passion. The dynamic duo, currently in their final year of the Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) program at NZTC, embarked on their academic journey together, united by a shared vision of becoming fully qualified early childhood teachers.

Their paths to NZTC may have differed, but their passion for education is the common thread. For Katalin, her journey began after a decade as a nanny in both the UK and New Zealand - a career later enriched by raising her three children.

Inspired by her late mother’s belief in her potential, Katalin is determined to turn her natural affinity for childcare into a meaningful career. "I want to make her proud and make myself proud by finally pursuing the path I should have started long ago," Katalin shares.

Benjie’s story took shape during the COVID-19 pandemic, when reduced work hours prompted a heartfelt conversation with his child’s kindergarten teacher. Her words sparked a career transformation. "She said I’d make a great kaiako. It didn’t take me long to realize that children mean the world to me and helping them grow is what I want to do," he reflects.

The couple’s ability to manage their studies alongside their busy lives as parents of three is a reflection of NZTC’s flexible learning options which offer a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical experience within ECE settings

The Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) enables students to focus on their areas of passion within early childhood education. Katalin’s focus is on supporting children’s social skills, recognising the challenges some face in large educational environments. Meanwhile, Benjie’s personal experience has inspired him to advocate for children with diverse needs, ensuring every child feels seen and supported.

Studying together has brought its own challenges, but it’s also strengthened their partnership. "We’ve learned to share responsibilities and support each other through obstacles," Katalin notes. This mutual encouragement has been key to their success.

Their journey demonstrates the transformative power of education, where flexible learning enables students like Katalin and Benjie to pursue their dreams and excel both personally and professionally.
