Angela Lunam
From her earliest memories of a kind and caring preschool teacher named Diana, Angela knew she wanted to one day offer the same sense of comfort, belonging, and confidence to tamariki in Aotearoa. Nearly 30 years later, that early inspiration has grown into a thriving career shaped by leadership, lifelong learning, and well-earned recognition.
Now the Centre Manager at ACG Strathallan Preschool, as well as Area Manager and Compliance Lead across ACG Early Learning Schools, Angela reflects on the journey that brought her here — a journey shaped by deep passion, sector experience, and a strong academic foundation from New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC).
“When I think about what inspired me to become a teacher, I go back to my own early childhood. I was a shy little girl, and my teacher made me feel seen, safe, and heard. I wanted to offer that same experience to others — to be that calm, steady person in a child’s early years who gives them confidence to explore and grow,” Angela shared.
Choosing to study at NZTC was a pivotal decision in Angela’s career. The combination of practical, hands-on experience, flexible learning formats like night school and online courses, and strong tutor support made it the perfect fit for someone passionate about responsive and inclusive teaching.
“NZTC’s philosophy really aligned with mine — with its focus on holistic development, culturally responsive practice, and child-led learning. The open class discussions and real-world placements were especially valuable, helping me build a teaching style grounded in reflection and connection.”
With 29 years of experience, Angela has witnessed significant evolution in the early childhood education (ECE) sector in New Zealand.
“There’s now greater emphasis on evidence-based practice, inclusive learning environments, and reflective teaching. We’ve seen growth in professional development opportunities, higher standards, and better support systems — all of which ultimately benefit the children in our care.”
Working within the Reggio Emilia-inspired philosophy of ACG Early Learning Schools and guided by the New Zealand early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki, Angela highlights the importance of values-driven leadership and teaching.
“One of the biggest lessons in my career is understanding how vital it is to align your values with your practice. When that happens, everything from curriculum planning to team culture becomes more meaningful and intentional.”
This alignment of vision, practice, and people was recently recognised when ACG Strathallan Preschool received the Exceptional Private Centre Award from the Early Childhood Council — a moment that she describes as a proud milestone for both herself and her team.
“Receiving this award made me incredibly proud of my team. They are dedicated teachers with a genuine passion for children, and it’s their commitment and creativity that truly bring our learning environment to life.”
With nearly three decades in the field, a thriving centre, and a nationally recognised team, Angela's journey continues to inspire a new generation of teaching— reminding us that the foundations we build in early childhood last a lifetime.
