A recipe for impact
Krystal transformed a love of cooking into a calling to nurture and educate the next generation.
Born and raised in Auckland, with roots in both the Cook Islands and New Zealand, Krystal’s journey into early childhood education began in an unexpected place—the kitchen.
Starting out as a chef and later working as a centre cook, she found joy in the creativity and precision of cooking. But over time, she discovered that her true passion wasn’t just in preparing meals—it was in nurturing young minds.
“There’s something incredibly rewarding about being part of a child’s early development,” she shares. “Helping them grow, learn, and discover the world around them—it’s a privilege I don’t take lightly.”
Her cultural background has played a significant role in shaping her approach to teaching. With a mother from the island of Rakahanga in the Cook Islands and a New Zealand European father, she grew up immersed in a blend of traditions and values. This upbringing gave her a deep appreciation for diversity and a strong sense of empathy—qualities that now enrich her work with children and families from all walks of life.
Inspired by values of compassion, kindness, and service, she felt a strong pull toward a career that would allow her to make a meaningful impact. Encouraged by her family and mentors, she made the leap into ECE and hasn’t looked back since.
To formalise her experience and deepen her knowledge, she chose to study with NZTC. The decision was driven by the college’s reputation for strong student support and flexible learning options—an essential factor for someone balancing work, study, and family life.
“The flexibility NZTC offered made all the difference,” she says. “I could continue working while studying, and the course content was both comprehensive and easy to follow. It really set me up for success.”
One of her favourite courses focused on internal evaluations and understanding what’s expected through the Education Review Office (ERO). It gave her practical tools to support both her own teaching and her colleagues’ planning and evaluation. She also credits her visiting lecturers—especially Sinitra—for their guidance and encouragement throughout her studies.
Now a qualified early childhood teacher, she spends her days creating a safe, engaging, and nurturing environment for young children. From morning greetings to storytelling, arts and crafts, and outdoor play, every moment is an opportunity to support their growth and development. She works closely with her team to plan meaningful learning experiences and ensure each child’s needs are met.
Her passion lies especially with infants and toddlers under two years old. “I love seeing them experience things for the first time—like the taste of food or the feel of grass under their feet. It’s magical to witness those moments.”
Outside of work, she enjoys cooking, baking, and spending time with her husband and two boys. Saturday mornings are reserved for cheering on her sons at their rugby league games—a family tradition she treasures.
After nearly 20 years in the early childhood sector, she’s proud to now hold a formal qualification. And she’s not stopping there. With her sights set on a master’s degree and a future in primary school teaching, she’s excited about what lies ahead.
“With a degree under my belt, the sky is the limit,” Krystal says. “I’m ready to keep growing, keep learning, and keep making a difference in the lives of children.”
