Qualification: Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

For recent graduate, Zijie Li, finding full-time employment in an ECE centre so soon after completing the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) has been the dream, and Li believes NZTC’s reputable qualifications are to thank.

“I just started my full-time job in April and I’m so excited to apply what I have learnt at NZTC to my teaching practice.

“NZTC has produced many excellent early childhood teachers in New Zealand. I believe by studying at NZTC I was able to develop professionally and learn advanced educational concepts, which ultimately enables me to better support young children in their development.”

As part of the program, Li undertook practical teaching experience at New Zealand early childhood centres – a component she says was a highlight and boosted her confidence in her teaching ability.

“Field Practice gave me a better understanding of what teachers do every day and it also gave me the opportunity to build trusting relationships with children and their parents.

“It has helped build my confidence and encouraged me to believe that I can become a well-rounded, qualified teacher.”

A strong desire to work with young children to support their skill development was a key motivator for Li when deciding a career path.

“I find joy and fulfilment in working with tamariki and feel a sense of purpose in helping them reach their full potential. Being able to build warm and close relationships with tamariki and their whānau is a lovely and meaningful aspect in my life.”

For others contemplating pursuing a career in early childhood in New Zealand, Li has three words: “Go for it!”

“As an ECE teacher, you have the opportunity to make a positive impact on children's lives. By providing a nurturing and supportive environment, you can help children develop important social, emotional, and cognitive skills.

“Also, ECE professionals are often given the opportunity to be creative in their work, as we develop teaching plans, activities and set up the learning environment for young children. This allows individuals to apply their creativity and develop engaging and effective learning experiences for children.”
