Qualification: New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5)

After graduating from high school in 2020, Chinese student Yi Zhang already knew she wanted to become a registered early childhood teacher in New Zealand.

“Because I had University Entrance, I was eligible to enrol in the New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) – a qualification that is perfect for someone like me starting out on their ECE journey.

“After gaining a strong foundation of theoretical and practical knowledge, I then plan to pathway into a higher program that will allow me to apply for New Zealand Teacher Registration upon completion.”

Having lived in New Zealand for six years now, Yi is enjoying the quality of life here.

“I love everything about this country! The people are so friendly and the weather is beautiful. I have made lots of wonderful friends who I can always rely on. Personally, I think New Zealand is the perfect place for children to grow up in.

“I definitely see myself staying here and gaining valuable teaching experience as a fully qualified educator.”

When initially considering her study options, Yi was drawn to NZTC’s progressive style of learning.

“Not only do we explore many important theoretical concepts, but we get to engage in practical hands-on learning throughout our studies.

“Opportunities to teach in a real-life ECE setting help to make us more employable upon graduation, and I love being able to interact with children from many different cultures.”

For Yi, the opportunities NZTC provides for collaboration amongst students and lecturers is a particular highlight.

“I find great value in the regular online tutorials we are required to participate in. These sessions are extremely beneficial as we can ask questions and discuss ideas together in a supportive environment.

“Communicating and learning with others from the comfort of home is incredibly ideal in terms of convenience and flexibility.”
