Tina Bradley
Name: Tina Bradley
Qualification: Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
With three children of her own and many years spent raising nieces and nephews, it was only natural that Tina Bradley decided to become an early childhood teacher.
“I thought I knew everything about working with young children, and from a practical point I did. However, I am the only member of my generation in the family who does not have a formal degree of any sort.
“A Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) seemed like the perfect fit, as it would enable me to learn why I did things the way I did when interacting with tamariki, as well as the theory behind their development.”
Initially working as an unqualified teacher, Tina sought advice from her centre manager when considering who to study with.
“Both my manager and many of the other teachers recommended New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC). They all said they would hire an NZTC graduate before anyone else as the college provides extensive opportunities for hands-on experience. Students also benefit from flexible online learning and there are no exams – which is certainly a win for me!”
Being a mature student, Tina was new to the concept of online learning which she initially found daunting.
“I had never even used a computer for study before! Although it has been challenging, I have found the lecturers, reception and Pastoral Support to be very helpful whenever I need assistance.
“The Discussion Forum has also been extremely valuable. Engaging with this has helped my understanding of assessment tasks and I have learnt a lot through contributing my own thoughts. I have come to realise that I do know things, yet am still able to learn and gain more knowledge from other students and my lecturers.”
Having now relaxed into her studies, Tina says her understanding around how tamariki learn has been greatly enhanced.
“I have been able to grow and change my teaching skills for the benefit of the children, whānau, my colleagues and the centre. I now have confidence that I can study and do well. I’ve discovered that I am a good problem-solver and am able to appreciate other people’s points of view – as knowledge shared is knowledge gained by all.”
