Qualification: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

After completing a master’s degree with the University of Auckland, Chinese student Nan Li is now pursuing the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) and is full of praise for the flexibility it offers.

“I was instantly drawn to NZTC’s flexible modes of learning - which from my experience – is not seen in other tertiary institutions to the same extent, and I was aware New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum is held in high esteem around the world.”

Originally looking to further her career as a program co-director in the tertiary sector and eventually undergo a PhD, Nan experienced a change of heart when fellow classmates within her master’s program spoke to the joys of teaching.

“Their positivity and love for working with young children inspired me to embark on a new journey and become an early childhood teacher. It’s extremely rewarding knowing that I am now playing a part in ensuring our children grow into responsible and well-rounded adults.”

As a degree graduate, Nan was eligible to enrol in NZTC’s Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) which can be achieved in just 1.33 years and will enable her to apply for New Zealand Teacher Registration upon completion.

“My goal is to become fully qualified and run my own centre one day alongside my husband who also teaches in the sector. The positive work-life balance New Zealand offers is ideal for people like me who have big goals but are juggling child-rearing, studying and working.”

Nan is impressed with New Zealand’s commitment to embracing different cultures.

“I enjoy the multicultural aspect of life here. It is wonderful seeing different cultures working together and respecting one another. I’ve particularly loved learning about Māori heritage and the effort that is put into preserving and celebrating this culture – it is truly special to see and be a part of.”
