Name: Meichenlu Wang

Qualification: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

After growing up with a mother who worked in ECE for 30 years, Meichenlu Wang originally saw herself pursuing a completely different career path.

“I completed a Bachelor of Commerce in Australia as it was a popular major and the university was well-known for its accounting courses. However, I came to realise I didn’t have a passion for the business sector.

“I have always enjoyed reading and discussing early childhood concepts with my mother, so I decided to take the leap and study ECE in a new environment.”

Having earlier this year completed the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC), Meichenlu has grown into a confident and competent educator.

“The Graduate Diploma is perfect for people like me who already hold a degree, but do not have a teaching background. It was like a bridge that connected my previous academic experience with my future career goals.

“I love that NZTC provides students with opportunities for practical experience in an ECE centre. By gaining this experience throughout my studies, it felt so natural implementing teaching strategies when I started working full-time, and I found I was more comfortable operating in a team.”

New Zealand was top of the list of study destinations for Meichenlu, who has found that life here has exceeded her expectations.

“I have met many kind-hearted people who are always willing to help me when needed. I also enjoy New Zealand’s natural beauty. It’s amazing that there are so many different types of stunning scenery in such a small country!

“There is much to do on the weekend without having to spend lots of money, such as hiking or enjoying a road trip with friends. I also like taking time to learn about the Māori culture.”

Now holding provisional teacher registration, Meichenlu is thriving in an ECE centre in Christchurch. She plans to continue teaching in New Zealand to deepen her understanding of the curriculum.

“It is so exciting to explore ECE in a place like this. I like that the country’s curriculum encourages play and requires educators to respect young children.”
