Jing-Hao Kuan
Name: Jing-Hao Kuan
Qualification: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) student, Jing-Hao Kuan, discovered a passion for facilitating children's learning potential after having children of his own.
Recognising the importance of early childhood education, Kuan and his wife combined their expertise in music education and child fitness to establish an early childhood studio catering to children aged three to five.
“With COVID-19, we had no choice but to shut our studio down. During that time, I reflected on my lack of theoretical knowledge and practical experience as a professional teacher.”
Motivated to bridge this gap, he chose to pursue an early childhood education qualification with NZTC.
He says the college’s reputation for delivering high-quality education, comprehensive program offerings, and commitment to student support were pivotal factors in his decision.
“My Associate Teachers and visiting lecturers have taken care of me so well throughout my study journey. They gave me the most heartfelt support when I felt frustrated and needed help.
“I enjoyed exchanging my viewpoints with peers on the discussion forum, which enabled me to move forward confidently.”
Studying at NZTC has equipped Kuan with invaluable knowledge and skills that have reshaped his approach to teaching.
“Previously, cultural differences led me to assume a more directive role as a teacher. However, I learnt how essential it is to step back and empower children to learn through free play.
“By providing children with an inclusive and responsive learning atmosphere with equity and social justice, I realised the child-oriented approach can foster their social competence and holistic development.”
One of the aspects he cherishes most about working in early childhood centres in New Zealand is immersing himself in a multicultural environment.
Collaborating with children and their whānau allows Kuan to gain a deeper understanding of diverse cultures and establish meaningful relationships that positively impact children's development.
“I regard Te Whāriki and Our Code, Our Standards as my professional bibles. I look forward to learning and growing with tamariki and being rewarded with their smiling faces.”
