Name: Janeta Tiatia
Qualification: Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education)
Being able to give back to her community by making a difference in children’s learning and development are the highlights of working in early childhood education, says Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) graduate, Janeta Tiatia.
“I love the opportunity to meet beautiful children and their whānau. I value all children as special and unique and enjoy forming positive and trusting relationships with them and their families.”
Tiatia enjoys embracing diversity and learning about children’s cultures, identities and languages.
“What intrigues me the most is getting to know children’s interests, their cultures and funds of knowledge, alongside their whānau. At the same time, I love carrying out assessment and planning to meet the strengths and interests of tamariki.”
During the Field Practice component of her studies, Tiatia enjoyed collaborating with centre staff, whānau and the wider community to celebrate different cultures represented, including her own Niuean background.
“During my studies, I regarded myself as a cultural leader. I celebrated Niuean and Samoan cultures during Language Week and showcased our cultures in cooking, dancing, singing, weaving and teaching tamariki basic words. I also loved assisting in the Matariki and Diwali celebrations.”
She shares how her teaching philosophy has evolved over the duration of the program.
“I’ve become more confident in my teaching as I learned more knowledge and skills about the profession, including understanding and abiding to the code of ethics, provided in Our Code Our Standards.
“I believe in building positive partnerships, being responsive and entering reciprocal relationships that involve whakamana (empowerment) and manaakitanga (mutual respect).
“I strive to provide a meaningful learning environment that enhances children’s agency and mana, all while integrating aroha and intentional teaching in my practice.”
Tiatia is proud to progress her career as a qualified early childhood teacher, and looks forward to her bright future ahead.
“I am very grateful to my family and NZTC for their very supportive contributions to my personal and professional journey in becoming a qualified teacher.”
