Gursharan Boparai is preparing for leadership opportunities in early childhood education.

The Master of Early Childhood Education student from India has a passion for being part of the growth and development of young children.

Fulfilling a long-held dream of studying in New Zealand, she chose NZTC for her postgraduate study because of its reputation in the early childhood education sector and looked forward to learning from experts in the field.

“I had the opportunity to connect with lecturers, fellow students and colleagues to build a valuable professional network and deepen my knowledge of ECE.”

Gursharan is delighted with her master’s program and says she is picking up advanced pedagogical knowledge and leadership qualities that will take her far in her career.

“My master's is helping my ability to adapt my teaching practice to the evolving needs of the children I look after and will help in any future leadership role. It’s also contributing to my personal growth and resilience.”

She has high praise for the support she is receiving at NZTC.

“The lecturers are always ready to help with any issues during my courses and are doing a fantastic job guiding us in the online discussion forums.”

Currently working as a teacher at Go Bananas Childcare in Takanini, Auckland, she is supported by her centre manager and team, as well as her master’s, to make better connections with tamariki and their whānau.

After reflecting on the immense support and encouragement from her own family while pursuing higher education, Gursharan has a few words of wisdom for other early childhood professionals:

“Postgraduate study allows you to delve deeper into the theoretical foundations of early childhood education and explore specialised areas of teaching to use in your day-to-day practice.

“The potential benefits are both professional and personal, making the investment into postgraduate study a rewarding experience and worthwhile for all ECE teachers.”
