Name: Frank Yan
NZTC Qualification: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

It was Frank Yan’s passion for education that first brought him from Changsha to Auckland, where he initially planned to pursue a career as a university lecturer.

Working as a tutor while studying towards a PhD in management, Frank was taken aback by the vast range of learning styles he saw in his students.

Inspired to make a difference earlier in students’ learning journeys, he decided to change his path to early childhood education.

“I decided to go back to when learning starts. I hope to make a real contribution to the community by offering support and resources to children in their early years,” said Frank.

Frank is now studying NZTC’s Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE), a program offering a flexible online learning environment alongside hands-on practical experience. Studying while working enables him to translate the knowledge, skills and theories he learns each day into practice.

“The course is well-designed with the most up-to-date theories, which are a useful guide for me to come back to if I come across any confusions in my work. It has laid an excellent foundation for my daily practices.”

Frank plans to pursue further study once he has gained a few years’ work experience, but for now he is enjoying learning and growing in his role as a preschool teacher.

“I love my days on the floor. It is remarkable that every day I get to experience, make sense and utilise what I’ve learnt. We’re helping to shape the future!”
