Name: Dawei Wei

Qualification: Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education)

Originally teaching Business English to adult students in China for six years, Dawei Wei decided to come to New Zealand and enrol in a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) with New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC).

“Education has always been the area in which my passion lies because I believe it has such a positive impact. My interest in early childhood education in particular began when my nieces came into the world. Through the time I have spent with them, my world has become so much more broad and colourful.

“There are so many possibilities for each individual child's future and so many potentialities to be realised, provided that they receive a quality education. I believe that by planting a positive seed in a child’s heart, we see them grow up with full and happy hearts.”

Dawei first decided to enrol with NZTC when he met with the team at an International Education Exposition in Beijing in 2018. He was thoroughly impressed with what the college had to offer.

“It was great to hear that NZTC’s qualifications are NZQA approved, and are also endorsed by the Ministry of Education in China. I found the flexible start dates for study really suited my lifestyle too.”

The support from the college is another positive element to Dawei’s journey.

“The staff at NZTC are so supportive. Whenever you have any questions, whether it’s about studying in New Zealand, or your assignments, you can always reach out to NZTC. I got a lot of academic support from lecturers, and all my questions were answered and any confusion was clarified.”

Dawei feels that his courses have been extremely invaluable.

“The content I’ve studied ranges from human development to teaching pedagogies, from inclusive practice to leadership, covering systematically the essential theories and knowledge we need to understand as qualified teachers.”

Dawei is now currently in the process of applying for a post-study work visa. He plans to work full-time in an early childhood education centre, and hopes to undergo more study in the future so he can further his learning journey.

“There is a lot to learn and practice in this sector. With more experience accumulated, I may consider enrolling in a higher degree so I can continue to develop my knowledge and skills in early childhood education.

“I have learnt during my studies that I’m not only helping children to grow, but that I am also continuing to grow with them.”
