What inspired you to pursue a career in early childhood education?
I had one kindergarten teacher who played a very important part in me picking this career. I saw how passionate she was about teaching, and wanted to be just like her when I grew up. I think I was only five years old but it stuck with me, I dreamed of inspiring children like she inspired me.

Why did you choose New Zealand as your study destination?
I knew I wanted to study abroad for a new experience, and New Zealand was my first choice because I knew that education was really good and the way that children are taught is different. It is a beautiful country and the people are very friendly. I also like how it’s quite similar to Malaysia in that it’s really multicultural and diverse.

How has your experience been studying with NZTC?
I really love it. The lecturers are so friendly and supportive, they’re really approachable. You can ask them any questions and they’ll be willing to help out. The Pastoral Support Team have also been great. One of the team members actually called me, just to ask how life was and to let me know she was there if I needed someone to talk to.

What have you enjoyed the most about studying with NZTC?
I have really loved learning about the importance of play. It is a whole new approach I’ve been exposed to, but I’m so glad I’ve had the opportunity to come and learn from this. This has also been my first time making friends with so many people from different countries. I’ve made lots of amazing friends who I’m really grateful for, and I get to learn a lot from them and their different cultures. During discussions in class, everyone has different opinions based on their own cultures and beliefs so it’s fun to learn from them.

What do you like most about working in early childhood education?
I picked early childhood because I really do love children and can see myself working with children long term. Music is also a passion of mine, so I love that this career gives me an opportunity to integrate this into my practice. At my centre I play the piano while the children sing along. They have so much fun, learn a lot and can express themselves to the fullest. I believe this is a really important element of education.
