Level 3 student Sanal Jacob finds a new calling in client-based healthcare.

Sanal Jacob

Name: Sanal Jacob

Qualification: New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing – Health Assistance Strand (Level 3)

Having previously worked as an Assistant Professor in Computer Science, Sanal Jacob took the opportunity to change direction when he moved from India to New Zealand in 2022.

He is now flourishing in a dynamic role as a Rehabilitation Coach with Evolution Healthcare, where he enjoys interacting with a range of people and takes pride in overseeing the rehabilitation plans of his clients on their journeys to positive health outcomes.

“I report on the client’s progress, support them to carry out physical activities, and understand their needs to help them progress towards independence following a traumatic brain injury or stroke.”

When it came to study, Jacob says he carried out a lot of research to find the best program but ultimately his choice was down to the reputation of NZTC.

“After researching tertiary providers, NZTC immediately stood out to me, and when I came across their zero fee study programs, I applied on the same day!

“Recognised by NZQA, the college offers flexible study options and a great online community where I can connect with peers, and exchange ideas and knowledge through live chats and discussion forums.”

In addition to the course materials, the opportunity to interact with his fellow students gives Jacob new insights and perspectives into healthcare, which he is then able to implement immediately in his practice.

He says the course HW304 – ‘Health Conditions’ was invaluable in understanding the signs, symptoms, monitoring processes and care strategies associated with common health conditions, and supporting a client with a condition named in an assignment helped him to go the extra mile in his care.

“After completing an assignment on dysphagia, I had the opportunity to directly apply the knowledge and techniques learned to care for a client with this condition, reinforcing my understanding and enhancing my practical skills.

“Every day I learn something new from my peers and lecturers that I hadn’t considered before. Because of the range of expertise and experience in the program, I’m achieving more in my own role.”

Jacob plans to pursue Level 4 studies to deepen his expertise, and open up more possibilities within his new career pathway.
