NZTC graduate Kelly Edwards was drawn to a career in health and wellbeing after spending time in hospital as a child, where she came to appreciate the difference the kindness of hospital staff could make in her day.

“Once I entered the sector I quickly discovered my strong passion for caring. I feel rewarded going home knowing I’ve helped someone live their best day possible and made their life a little brighter,” Kelly said.

After years working as a Healthcare Assistant, she attended an information session at NZTC and became inspired to learn more so she could give her clients the high level of care they deserved.

The mother of one describes her experience studying with NZTC as “exceptional”, with the college’s flexible learning modes enabling her to complete Level 3 and Level 4 programs without sacrificing her career or family life.

“Working full time with a toddler, I would have found it very hard to study elsewhere. The fact that with NZTC I could study from home in the time I chose and still feel part of an interactive classroom sealed the deal for me.”

The Healthcare Assistant felt supported throughout her program and thoroughly enjoyed her courses, which she found highly relevant to her work.

“I found it fun because I was interested in everything I was learning and it was knowledge I could really put into use in my everyday work. My studies have improved the quality of my care and I’ve also used the knowledge to support my team members.”

Kelly encourages other Healthcare Assistants to avoid letting a lack of confidence hold them back.

“Don’t worry about whether you think you can do it or not. With the support from NZTC and flexible study options, everyone can achieve this,” she said.

“Go for it. It will give you knowledge and inspire you to do your best every day. This will benefit not only your clients, but also their family and your team members.”
