Healthcare volunteer motivated to pursue studies

Dianna Smith

For recent Level 3 Health and Wellbeing graduate, Dianna Smith, a passion for helping others runs in the family.

“I used to accompany my mum when she worked as a Healthcare Assistant in a retirement village and private hospital, and I eventually became a volunteer there.

“During this time, I gained a strong sense of purpose from assisting clients with their daily activities, as well as a better understanding of the significance of Healthcare Assistants and what a rewarding career it is.”

Her decision to enrol in Level 3 studies with NZTC came about after health troubles of her own, and witnessing first-hand the quality care she received during her time in hospital.

“After experiencing an extremely turbulent time with my health, which required a stay in ICU and a lengthy stay in hospital, I finally decided to pursue study in health and wellbeing. The level of care I received during my hospitalisation inspired me to pursue a career in this field.”

Working part-time and with three young children, Smith was drawn to NZTC’s Health and Wellbeing programs, where she could study via NZTC Online, allowing her to fit studies around her busy schedule.

“NZTC’s online learning structure enabled me to study at my own pace and around my other commitments. The online support provided by the Pastoral Support Team, course lecturers, and fellow students made NZTC an excellent choice.”

Smith is excited to use the skills and knowledge gained through her studies to provide quality care and hopes to continue upskilling with Level 4 studies.

“For someone who has never studied in the healthcare sector before, I found the program highly informative. I thoroughly enjoyed how each course allowed me to explore scenarios from different viewpoints other than my own personal feelings and views.

“The course was easy to follow and provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the various aspects of Healthcare Assistant roles, client safety and wellbeing, and cultural understanding.

“Thank you NZTC for making my studies so enjoyable and for setting me up for a rewarding and exciting career in the healthcare sector!”
