ECE scholarship helps recipient turn teaching dream into reality

Tonya Botherway

While the Covid-19 pandemic closed the door on overseas study in the U.S, Tonya Botherway is excited to be embarking on a new study adventure with NZTC.

“Before pursuing my Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) program I was studying in America on a hockey scholarship, but returned home due to the pandemic.

"I have always loved working with children and used to work as a nanny and in an early education centre during my school holidays, so I decided that I wanted to pursue this passion.”

After returning from overseas, she was drawn to the scholarship offered by NZTC and decided it was the perfect chance to begin studies.

“While I was looking for providers, I saw the NZTC scholarship opportunity which influenced my decision. It was a great support and helped kick-start my studies in early childhood education.”

The keen hockey player says the flexibility of studying with the college was a big drawcard for her, allowing her to work towards her goal of becoming a fully qualified teacher, while balancing work and sport.

“I chose NZTC for the flexibility of being able to study remotely but I also love the ability to be able to work in a centre as part of my studies.”

Botherway says a highlight of her study journey so far has been Field Practice, where she enjoys witnessing the growth and development of young children.

“I am loving my Field Practice, and learning on the job as I go has allowed me to link work experiences to what I am learning in my studies which has been extremely beneficial.

“My favourite part is working with the children and trying to create a place they want to come to each morning. I also love seeing the growth and development of the children and knowing the impact you have on them is extremely rewarding.”

Scholarship applications are open until 29 July 2022. Study must commence by 5 September 2022. For domestic students only.
