Commitment, passion and dedication – just some of the words that best describe the Associate Teachers who support the students of New Zealand Tertiary College on a daily basis as they undertake the practical experience requirements of their study programs.

NZTC recently engaged with the early childhood community to hear the remarkable stories of Aotearoa’s early childhood teachers who support students on their journey towards NZ teacher registration.

An annual NZTC Associate Teacher Award has been established to recognise Associate Teachers who go above and beyond supporting and inspiring their students, and it was the incredible work of Joan Avery that cemented her receiving of the 2024 award.

Jo was genuinely stunned to learn about her nomination and subsequent win. A student of Jo’s nominated her and upon learning about Jo’s win organised a Mat Time at their early childhood centre to share Jo’s good news with tamariki and staff.

“I was greatly surprised and totally unaware that my name had even been put forward and that there was even such an award. I am so humbled to have even been considered,” recalls Jo.

Jo’s teaching journey started after being inspired by her own teachers in Zimbabwe. Their guidance and dedication left an indelible mark on her. After immigrating to the UK and later New Zealand she transitioned into early childhood education through a bridging course in 2011. Since then, Jo has flourished in ECE, working hard to serve and support her community.

“I love seeing people succeed and encouraging them to recognise their strengths,” she says. “Seeing them realise their achievements on their own merit and effort is so rewarding.”

Jo’s journey into ECE reflects her beliefs in the power of teaching. She works to embolden and nurture her tamariki. She especially enjoys supporting students across diverse settings, from the classroom to outdoor education programs.

“Teaching is a lifelong journey,” reveals Jo. “Watching the students grow in their practice, sharing my knowledge and sharing in their ‘aha’ moments is just the beginning of the whoop of delights that follow.”

Jo believes that effective Associate Teachers embody honesty, empathy and a willingness to learn.

“Associate Teachers shape the next generation by supporting their emotional and physical journey through study, teaching, listening, advising and celebrating their goals,” explains Jo. “We also must recognise that it is a team effort and a reciprocal relationship that is strengthened through highs and lows.”

Looking ahead, Jo remains committed to sharing her wealth of knowledge and experiences and supporting her colleagues with their learning.

NZTC is honoured to acknowledge Jo for her dedication and success, and we are proud she is a part of our community.
