Research submissions are now open for New Zealand Tertiary College’s next edition of early childhood education research e-journal, He Kupu.

Providing a valuable professional development opportunity for educators and practitioners to share knowledge within the sector, the peer-reviewed journal has a global database with over 11,000 subscribers.

Titled, ‘Integrating Information Communication Technology in Early Childhood Education: Innovations, Impacts and Insights’, the April 2025 edition will focus on the integration and impact of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in early childhood education. The issue will explore innovative strategies, research insights and practical applications of ICT that enhance learning and development in early childhood settings.

According to Sean Dolan, NZTC Academic Dean and He Kupu editor, “He Kupu is important because it allows for the sharing of contemporary thinking on matters that are important to teachers in early childhood education. It is accessible for all teachers and supports the sharing of up-to-date research that informs the sector.”

Submissions can take various forms, including research studies, case studies, reflective essays or practical teaching strategies. The articles should clearly connect to the theme of Integrating ICT in Early Childhood Education and offer insights relevant to practitioners, policy makers and researchers.

“When submitting for He Kupu it is important that what is being presented is meaningful for the early childhood sector, whether it is a review of best practices or research of contemporary settings,” advises Sean. “The writing and approaches should inform teaching practices with the ultimate outcome being enhanced learning for all ākonga.” 

Examples of topics that align with the theme include, but are not limited to:

  • Digital Literacy: Exploring how digital tools can be integrated into ECE to develop both educators' and children's digital literacy skills.
  • Technology-Enhanced Learning: Strategies for using ICT to create rich, engaging, and interactive learning experiences that support diverse learning needs.
  • Equity and Access: Examining how ICT can be used to bridge gaps in access to quality educational resources, particularly in underserved communities.
  • Teacher Training and Support: Innovative approaches to preparing and supporting ECE educators in effectively incorporating ICT into their teaching practices.
  • Parental and Community Engagement: Utilising technology to foster communication and collaboration between educators, families, and communities in the learning process.
  • Assessment and Feedback: The role of technology in enhancing formative assessment practices and providing timely feedback to support children's learning progress.
  • Artificial Intelligence: Exploring opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence technology and their potential impacts on early childhood education.
  • Critical perspectives on digital technologies: Critically examine the multifaceted impacts of digital technologies on children and early childhood education.

Final submission date is 3 March 2025.
