MR613 : The Philosophy of Early Childhood: Historical and Modern Perspectives

This course is about the philosophical underpinning of childhood and early childhood education.  You will consider a range of perspectives on the young child and on childhood, with reference to understandings about beliefs, rights and values.  You will critically examine the ideas of philosophers such as Rousseau, Pestalozzi, Froebel, Dewey, Steiner, and Montessori as well as contemporary views and cultural realities of childhood.  A final aim for this course is envisioning children within childhoods of the future and considering implications for pedagogy and provision of early childhood education.
