MR501 : The Young Child: Childhood in the Early Years

This course explores the young child within the changing notion of childhood. Considering your own experiences of childhood, you examine the contexts and influences that shape your beliefs and values. You also examine a range of historical, philosophical, cultural, societal, political and spiritual perspectives that shape values and beliefs about childhood. Through reflections and review of the literature, you critically consider the influence of childhood, particularly on the child’s sense of developing autonomy, responsibility, resilience, and spirituality. Consideration is also given to envisioning the young child within childhoods of the future, and implications for their development, as well as on early childhood pedagogy.
