Training teachers for the Early Childhood profession

New Zealand Tertiary College (NZTC) is a private tertiary education provider based in Auckland, New Zealand. Since 1982, we have specialised in training people to become qualified early childhood teachers who care for and educate children aged 6 and under. Our graduates work in the early childhood profession in New Zealand and throughout the world.

Our vision is to empower our students with knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs that will enable them to be effective early childhood teachers. To fulfill our vision we aim to:

  • deliver relevant and high quality academic training in early childhood education
  • provide a stimulating, supportive learning environment for our students
  • recognise the uniqueness of early childhood development in the life cycle
  • create a learning environment that enables our students to realise their highest potential as early childhood teachers
  • give our students practical skills for working in the early childhood sector
  • recognise and appreciate that our students are uniquely gifted and their individuality should be respected
  • educate our students to support the child's primary caregivers - the parents
  • acknowledge that early childhood teachers can make a difference in the lives of young children and their families; and
  • enable our students to be true professionals in their career.

Accreditation

We are approved and accredited to offer early childhood teaching qualifications by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) – the New Zealand government entity that oversees quality assurance for all New Zealand assessments and qualifications.  All of our qualifications are on the New Zealand Register of Quality Assured Qualifications .

Professional recognition

New Zealand Teacher Registration

Our Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) and Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) programs are recognised by the New Zealand Teachers Council .  Graduates of these programs can apply for registration with the Teachers Council, and will be issued with a practicing certificate.  After two years working as a teacher, they can apply for full teachers registration in New Zealand.

Our Conceptual Framework (PDF, 215KB) identifies and discusses the 13 principles underpinning all of the New Zealand Tertiary College programs that provide students with a pathway towards teacher registration. These principles are guided by the New Zealand Teachers Council.

Industry connections

NZTC offers early childhood teacher education to students who work in a variety of services and organisations.

We have close ties with numerous early childhood service providers. We also work closely with the Early Childhood Council - the industry body that represents a large percentage of the early childhood industry in New Zealand.

NZTC in India

In 2009, NZTC established an office in Mumbai to share our experience and provide teacher education programs for the early childhood profession in India. We are currently offering our NZQA-approved Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 5) and Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6). These programs are delivered to our India-based students via NZTC’s online learning environment – NZTC Online.
