What is an Associate Teacher?

An Associate Teacher is a teacher in an early childhood centre who provides mentoring, professional support and guidance during the student's Field Practice.

Field Practice is the assessed practical component of NZTC's early childhood teaching qualifications, and gives students the opportunity to put the theoretical components of their qualification into practice in an early childhood centre.

Our Associate Teachers play a pivotal role in supporting and guiding our students and helping them become teachers of excellence who positively impact on the lives of children, their families, and their communities.

Associate Teacher qualifications and benefits

We require our Associate Teachers to hold a minimum qualification of a Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) or equivalent, and it is preferred that you are a registered teacher with the New Zealand Teachers Council, and have a minumum of one year's teaching experience following graduation.

NZTC Associate Teachers receive the following benefits:

  • Ongoing professional development-workshops to help you effectively support and mentor students
  • AT NEWS: An e-newsletter to keep you up to date with information related to field practice at NZTC, and other items of interest.
  • Access to up to date and relevant early childhood literature and research
  • Financial recognition when supporting our student in their 'Out of Home' field practice
  • Guidance from our Field Practice team, lecturers and pastoral support as required.
