EC504 : Culturally Responsive Early Childhood Education

This course supports you in understanding concepts related to culture and cultural diversity in light of your own culture and early childhood education, including teachers, children and their families/whānau. It introduces you to the bicultural foundation of Aotearoa/New Zealand, including a brief introduction to The Treaty of Waitangi/Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its influence on society and early childhood education. Particular focus is given to the bicultural obligations for early childhood teachers, with an introduction to strategies and practices so support bicultural development.

Multiculturalism and growing cultural diversity of early childhood education settings and communities are examined in relation to developing respectful and inclusive attitudes, understanding and practices. The overall intention of this course is to support you in becoming a culturally responsive professional who is able to genuinely support equitable education for all children.
