Teaching Qualifications

Study to become an early childhood teacher

If your goal is to become a qualified early childhood teacher in New Zealand, you will need to complete a teaching qualification. Requirements for teaching qualifications are set by the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (Education Council) - the teacher licensing body in New Zealand. Teaching qualifications require you to complete practical experience as well as theoretical learning throughout your stages of study.

Below is an overview of our qualifications in early childhood teaching:

Teaching Stream Pathways

The Certificate of Early Childhood Education (Level 5) and Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) pathway into our Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) degree. This degree is recognised by the Education Council of Aotearoa New Zealand (Education Council), which means that graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration.

If you're transferring into the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) from our certificate courses, you will need to complete prerequisite courses and meet the entry criteria.

Degree holders can apply to enter the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE), which will also enable you to apply for teacher registration with the Education Council.

The Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) and the Graduate Diploma in Teaching (ECE) pathway into NZTC's four postgraduate qualification options.
